A Girl Not Named Sybil

Posted By: wbhazel1 on October 17, 2011 at 10:15 am

This article was particularly fascinating to me for many reasons not the least of which is the transcript record is maintained at my Alma Mater John Jay College of Criminal Justice, City University of New York. The article written by Debbie Nathan in The New York Times shares some insight in the writing of the popular book Sybil penned by Flora Schreiber and made into the immensely popular movie bearing the same name.

It brought to consciousness the story of a patient who purported to have 16 distinct and separate personalities all co-located in one person. It shaped and changed mental health diagnoses forever by creating the initial diagnosis of Multiple Personality Disorder now known as Disassociative-Identity Disorder. This article provides for us the backstory if you will of an actual patient who exemplified the criteria which changed mental health practice forever. Recently we have learned as presented by Dr. Robert Reiber, a Psychologist at John Jay College when he presented that the original case was hoax in that the patient reported that she did NOT experience the reported symptoms. It was all lies allegedly originating by the patient’s psychiatrist Dr. Cornelia Wilbur who is also accused of having broken numerous ethical boundaries in the treatment of this patient. Please enjoy the article.
